Factors wisdom teeth removal cost

How much does wisdom teeth removal cost?

We get this question a lot, and it’s perfectly normal to ask! Since everyone’s situation is different, we’ll give you a personalised quote after your initial consultation. That way, you’ll know exactly what to expect.

There are a few things that can impact the cost of removing your wisdom teeth. Here’s a quick rundown:

The more wisdom teeth that need extraction, the higher the cost. Some patients only need one or two removed, while others may require all four to be taken out.

If your wisdom teeth are impacted (stuck under the gum or bone), the procedure becomes more complex. Impacted teeth generally need a surgical approach, which can increase costs compared to a straightforward extraction.

The type of anaesthesia used affects the overall cost.

  • Local anaesthesia (numbing the area) is the most basic option and usually less expensive.
  • Sedation or general anaesthesia (putting you to sleep) is often used for impacted teeth or multiple extractions. While it’s more comfortable, it adds to the cost due to the need to have this done in a private hospital and the presence of an anaesthetist. Just a heads up—the anaesthetist will send their invoice directly to you. We don’t handle their billing, so you’ll need to settle it with them directly.

You may need imaging scans before the procedure to assess the position and condition of your wisdom teeth. These tests are essential for ensuring safe surgery but will add to the total cost. Please note that the costs for these tests will be billed directly by the pathology provider, and you’ll need to settle them separately.

Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed in a hospital setting. However, many people prefer to be asleep under general anaesthesia, especially when all four wisdom teeth need to be extracted at once. In that case, there may be additional costs such as accommodation, operating theatre charges, and post-operative care fees. If you have private health insurance with hospital cover then the out of pocket costs usually only involves the excess.

The next question is whether Medicare and health insurance cover wisdom teeth removal. We’ll discuss this in the following section.

Cost wisdom teeth removal with insurance

Do Medicare and/or private health insurance cover the cost of wisdom teeth removal?

Does Medicare cover wisdom teeth removal?

Medicare does not cover the surgical fees for dental procedures, including wisdom teeth extraction. These procedures are classified as dental rather than medical, meaning they must be covered through dental extras on private health insurance.

Does private health cover wisdom teeth removal?

Yes, private health insurance can cover part of the cost of wisdom teeth removal. Here’s how it generally works:

  • Extras cover: This type of cover applies when wisdom teeth removal is done “in the chair” at a dental clinic. It can cover consultations, X-rays, and the extraction itself, depending on your policy.
  • Hospital cover: If your wisdom teeth removal requires a hospital setting, a silver-tier policy or higher is usually needed. This type of cover can contribute towards hospital accommodation, theatre fees, and general anaesthesia costs. However, you may still have out-of-pocket expenses depending on your excess and the agreement between your insurer and the hospital.

The out-of-pocket cost to attend a hospital can vary widely based on several factors, including your insurance coverage, the type of medical and dental services you receive, and the specific terms of your insurance plan.

It’s best to confirm your level of cover and any waiting periods with your insurer before scheduling the procedure.
